Audition: Ensuring Performance Success
Though the word audition has primarily an auditory ring about it, in practice it is not so. Today, the word is applied to dancers, actors and other performers. It is a mock performance by an actor, singer, musical instrument player, dancer, orator or other performers. It is a performance of a pre-arranged piece to a group of judges or sometimes specially invited guests. This is a necessary step to ascertain the success of the performance when delivered to the audience either in an auditorium or through radio or television broadcast.
An audition often is the scientific way of finding out the aptitude and suitability of a performer. The audition is done before hardcore veterans in an area of specialization and their assessment helps in judging the caliber of an artist and aids either selecting or culling a candidate. It is the same as done in a job interview by a recruiting agent.
The auditory significance of the word is due to the importance of voice in all performances of the past. In the ancient days when there was no way of augmenting human voice by mechanical devices the voice quality of the actor was of paramount importance. Some of the ancient Athenian theaters were round shaped and could house some times twenty thousand spectators. The actors were usually given a larger than life size by the use of masks and heavily padded clothing and heavy buskins. However, nothing could be done for the voice. So, the voice quality of the actor was crucial. So, before a candidate in ancient drama was considered for acting, his voice quality was carefully weighed. So, auditory significance of the word audition has a historical origin.
With the origin of radio broadcast the quality of voice suited for radio broadcast became an important consideration. Today, we are in a world that gives importance to visual aspects of performance. It is possible to give some allowance for poor audio quality if the visual appeal of the artist is remarkable. However, in radio broadcast the most important appeal is auditory. So, all categories of radio artists were taken only after a careful audition. In a radio broadcast voice quality is very important. So, audition is an important method of ascertaining the voice quality of a broad cast artist.
In the world of entertainment industry auditions are required for various purposes. Today, the entertainment industry is a world of many risks. The industry is forced to work on tight deadlines. The success of programs is largely decided by the individual artists who make up the group. So, the selection of the hands is decided by audition by experts.
The idea of audition has today taken tele-commute format. The present internet technology has taken away all the barriers in human interaction. The tele-commute is a person who moves from one place to another through cyber space. So, it is possible to conduct auditions from artists who are living many many kilo meters from you. The present day technology has made these distant, remote, or technology driven auditions very successful and is going to be a routine procedure of the future auditions that are going to be the order of the day soon.
